1. Introduction

At Universe International School (UIS), Erbil, our commitment to academic excellence is delivered through a well-structured, student-centered approach to teaching and learning. We follow the Pearson Edexcel curriculum, a globally respected framework that fosters inquiry, independence, and achievement across all stages of education.

This policy outlines the key principles, goals, and operational standards that guide our curriculum design, teaching methodology, and assessment strategy, ensuring that students are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and values to thrive in a globalized world.


2. Curriculum Philosophy

The UIS curriculum is designed to:

  • Deliver broad, balanced, and coherent learning experiences.
  • Promote critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving.
  • Prepare students for Pearson Edexcel IGCSE, International A-Level, and other international benchmarks.
  • Support holistic development – including academic, emotional, social, and moral growth.

3. Curriculum Structure

Early Years (Foundation Stage)

  • Based on a play-based and inquiry-led model.
  • Emphasizes communication, language, literacy, numeracy, physical development, and social-emotional skills.
  • Learning is structured around themes and developmental milestones.

Primary School (Years 1–6)

  • English National Curriculum adapted to local needs.
  • Core subjects: English, Mathematics, Science, Computing, Social Studies.
  • Foundation subjects: Art, Music, Physical Education, Islamic Studies (where applicable), Arabic, and Kurdish.
  • Emphasis on literacy and numeracy fluency, along with digital literacy and cross-curricular connections.

Secondary School (Years 7–11)

  • Follows the Pearson Edexcel Lower Secondary and IGCSE pathways.
  • Students study a mix of core and elective subjects, including:
    • English Language & Literature
    • Mathematics
    • Physics, Chemistry, Biology
    • ICT / Computer Science
    • History / Geography
    • Arabic, Kurdish, Islamic Studies (as applicable)
  • Focus is placed on preparing students for IGCSE examinations in Year 11.

Sixth Form (Years 12–13)

  • Follows the Pearson Edexcel International A-Level curriculum.
  • Students typically choose 3–4 subjects based on future university/career aspirations.
  • Strong emphasis on independent research, academic writing, and university preparation.

5. Assessment Philosophy

Assessment at UIS is designed to:

  • Inform teaching and curriculum planning.
  • Provide meaningful feedback to students and parents.
  • Prepare students for international examinations.
  • Support students’ personal growth and self-reflection.

6. Types of Assessments

Formative Assessment (Assessment for Learning):

  • Frequent, low-stakes checks for understanding (quizzes, journals, observations).
  • Used to adapt instruction and give timely feedback.
  • Encourages student involvement in goal setting and progress tracking.

Summative Assessment (Assessment of Learning):

  • Conducted at the end of units, terms, or academic years.
  • Includes tests, projects, presentations, and practical exams.
  • Aligned with Pearson Edexcel learning outcomes and grading rubrics.

Standardized & External Examinations:

  • IGCSE and A-Level examinations by Pearson Edexcel.
  • Internal mock exams are held to prepare students and gauge readiness.
  • Results are used for academic progression, career counseling, and university admission.

7. Grading & Reporting

UIS follows Pearson Edexcel’s grading standards, with internal grading scales aligned for consistency. Student progress is communicated through:

  • Termly academic reports
  • Parent-teacher conferences
  • Continuous feedback via digital platforms
  • Academic counseling meetings (especially in Years 9–13)

8. Curriculum Review & Improvement

The curriculum is reviewed annually by the Academic Leadership Team and updated based on:

  • Changes to Pearson Edexcel specifications

Any major updates are shared with staff, students, and parents in advance.


9. Inclusion & Differentiation

UIS is committed to supporting diverse learning needs, including students with:

10. Language of Instruction
